DPF cleaning, regen & diagnostics — fixed at the cause, in Wigan
Got a blocked DPF, an amber warning that won’t clear, or your car or van stuck in limp mode? At Panache Tuning we diagnose why it blocked in the first place, clean the filter properly, and make sure it doesn’t block again, rather than just resetting the warning light and sending you on your way.
Symptoms we see every week
Amber DPF warning light on the dash
This is the early warning that means the filter is filling up and the ECU wants to do a regeneration. Ignored, the amber light escalates into a red warning, then limp mode, and eventually a vehicle that won’t start at all.
Limp mode / loss of power
A red DPF warning with the engine power restricted, where the ECU has decided regeneration can’t complete. This is often caused by short journeys, a failed sensor, or a secondary fault with the EGR, turbo or injectors preventing the right conditions for the regen to finish.
Excessive soot, white smoke or strong diesel smell
These are usually signs that a passive regen is trying to complete but can’t, or that a secondary fault is dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust. Either way, give us a call and get it checked before the problem escalates.
Forced regen attempted but fails repeatedly
A dealer or another garage has tried forced regens that keep failing, or the warning light keeps coming back a few days later. Usually this means the filter is beyond passive cleaning, or there’s an unresolved upstream fault that nobody has properly investigated.
Why your DPF blocked — and why it’ll block again if you don’t fix the cause
DPFs don’t block for one single reason, they block because something stopped a normal regen from completing properly. Fixing the filter without addressing that underlying something is exactly why people end up back with the same problem three months later.
The real root causes
- Short journeys / cold running — the number one cause we see. The filter needs exhaust temperatures of around 600°C for long enough to burn off soot, and short journeys rarely get there.
- Failed EGR valve — stuck open or clogged, dumping soot and skewing the regen strategy
- Faulty DPF differential pressure sensor — ECU can’t tell the filter’s state correctly
- Low-grade or contaminated fuel — oil dilution, biodiesel blends that won’t burn clean
- Failed glow plugs — engine runs rich on startup, more soot
- Turbo / boost leaks — incorrect air-fuel ratio produces unburnt carbon
- Wrong oil spec — some modern diesels need low-SAPS oil; the wrong oil actively contaminates the DPF ash load
What we do about it
A proper DPF service starts with diagnostics, not with the filter itself.
At Panache Tuning we find what caused the blockage, fix that underlying problem first, and then clean the filter properly.
That’s the difference between a fix that lasts for the long term and a fix that ends up back in your inbox three months later.
How a DPF service with us works
Diagnostic first
We start by reading live data from the ECU, including current soot load, accumulated ash load, differential pressure, exhaust gas temperatures, regen history, EGR position and fuel trims. This tells us what actually happened and why, rather than just confirming the filter is blocked.
Upstream fault repair
If we find a secondary fault during the diagnostic, whether that’s an EGR stuck open, a failed pressure sensor, a turbo leak or a faulty glow plug, we fix that first. Cleaning a DPF with an unresolved upstream fault is a waste of everyone’s money and time.
Right clean for the filter
There are three cleaning tiers depending on how bad the filter is, with the details below. We’ll tell you up front which tier your filter actually needs, rather than charging for the cheapest option and hoping it works.
ECU reset + verification
After the clean is done we reset the ECU soot and ash values properly, rather than just clearing codes and hoping for the best. The car or van is then road-tested and the live data is re-read to confirm differential pressure is back in spec before you head off.
Handover
Before you leave we’ll talk you through what caused the problem in the first place, what we did to fix it, and most importantly what you can do to stop it happening again. Things like driving patterns, oil spec and service interval all play a part in the long term health of any DPF.
Forced regen
If the soot load is recoverable and the ash load is low, we run a dynamic regen at working temperature. This is the cheapest option but only works on filters that aren’t too far gone.
On-car chemical clean
We run a specialist DPF cleaning solution through the filter at working temperature, followed by a full regen. This is the middle-tier option for filters that are too blocked to regen on their own but aren’t yet clogged with ash.
Off-car deep clean
We remove the filter completely, blow the ash out and flush the internal media. This is the only route for filters with high ash loads or where chemical cleaning isn’t enough on its own. It’s a longer job but restores the filter to near-new flow.
Typical time in the workshop is 1–4 hours depending on the cleaning method · Deep clean jobs sometimes need to stay overnight.
Why it’s worth doing properly
12 years of diesel experience
Panache Tuning started back in 2014 as a mobile carbon-cleaning service, and DPFs, EGRs and soot-related faults have been core to our work from day one. This isn’t a sideline service for us, it’s the problem we’ve been solving for longer than anything else.
Diagnostic-first, not parts-first
Most garages quote a DPF replacement at £1,500–£3,000+ without doing a proper diagnostic first. A huge share of those “needs a new DPF” verdicts turn out to be solvable with a thorough clean plus an upstream repair for a fraction of the price. At Panache Tuning we’ll always tell you honestly when a replacement is actually needed and when it isn’t.
Root-cause fix, not a reset
Any scan tool can clear a DPF warning light for 15 minutes. Fixing the underlying reason the filter blocked, so the light doesn’t come back next week, is the actual job that needs doing. That’s what we do at Panache Tuning.
DPF delete — what’s legal and what isn’t
We get asked about “DPF delete” every single week, so let’s be straight about it from the start.
For road-registered vehicles used on UK public roads: since February 2014 the DVSA has treated DPF removal as an MOT failure on visual inspection of the exhaust system. Beyond the MOT issue, driving a vehicle on public roads with the emissions control system removed or disabled is not legal and carries a fine of up to £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a light commercial.
Where a permanent software solution is appropriate:
- Off-road vehicles — agricultural, plant, motorsport, private-land-only
- Export vehicles — shipped to markets where UK emissions rules don’t apply
- Vehicles where the DPF has physically collapsed or melted and the owner has made an informed, documented decision about the vehicle’s future use
In those situations, a permanent software solution paired with the correct hardware change avoids the recurring-fault cycle. At Panache Tuning we’ll only do this work where the use case is legal and properly documented.
If you’re unsure where your situation sits, give us a call on 07597 921326 and we’ll talk through it honestly with you.
What it costs
We price DPF work by the job, not by the clock.
| Job | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DPF diagnostic (live data + scan + advice) | £60–£90 | Soot & ash load, pressure sensor check, fault-code read, written findings |
| Forced regen (on-car, if recoverable) | £80–£140 | Only suitable for lower soot loads |
| On-car chemical clean + regen | £180–£280 | Middle-tier option, specialist cleaning solution |
| Off-car deep clean (filter out, flush) | £300–£500 | Most thorough option. Longer job. |
| Upstream fault repair (EGR, sensor, etc.) | POA | Priced after diagnostic |
| ECU solution (where legal — see above) | POA | Only after a proper consultation |
These prices are typical ranges, not fixed quotes. Give us a call on 07597 921326 for a firm number once we know the exact vehicle and the fault we’re dealing with. Finance is available for the larger jobs.
Reviews from diagnostic customers
“Steve came to my address to solve an orange engine fault, explained the fault and the problem, fixed the issue. Very helpful, friendly and professional. Highly recommend.”
“Excellent service, quick, efficient and a real difference to the vehicle. The vehicle runs infinitely better — improved the MPG by around 10–15% overall and the throttle response is considerably better. Now drives like a new vehicle.”
“Highly recommend this business! Steve so very gracefully fit us in due to an emergency, carried out the work in fantastic time and charged a more than reasonable price. He never treated me any different because I was a woman (unlike other services I’d been to previously for the same problem, who assumed I didn’t know what I was talking about!). My husband is already in discussions for more work, thanks again Steve!”
“A+ service and very responsive! Steve was very accommodating and helpful. He looked at my car and within the hour told me what my issues were and was very honest with me with the options. Very fair price and very honest approach — would recommend a million times over. I certainly have my go-to garage for the foreseeable now!”
Questions we get asked
My DPF light is on — is it urgent?
If the warning is amber, it’s not an emergency but you should book in within the week. Ignored, an amber light becomes a red warning within a few hundred miles of further driving. If the warning is red or you’re in limp mode, stop driving and give us a call. Every mile in limp mode piles more soot onto an already-saturated filter and raises the risk of the filter melting, which turns a £200 clean into a £1,500+ replacement.
Can’t I just clear it with a code reader?
No, you can’t. Clearing the fault code without addressing the underlying soot load just hides the warning for a few days at most. The filter is still blocked, the regen cycle is still failing, and the problem will come back, usually worse than before. Proper DPF work is a thorough clean, a cause diagnosis and an ECU values reset, not a code clear.
How much does a replacement DPF cost?
Genuine replacement filters range from £700 to £3,500 depending on the vehicle, plus the fitting cost on top. Before anyone quotes you that figure, insist on a proper diagnostic first. A huge share of “needs a new DPF” verdicts turn out to be solvable with a chemical clean or a deep clean for a fraction of the cost. At Panache Tuning we quote replacements honestly, not as a reflex.
Will short journeys destroy my DPF?
Repeatedly, yes they will. DPFs need periodic high-temperature regens to burn off soot, and short city journeys rarely get the exhaust hot enough for the regen to complete. If your driving is almost entirely short-distance, a diesel DPF is always going to be a losing battle. We’ll tell you that honestly and suggest either a longer weekly motorway run, or in some cases rethinking whether diesel is the right choice for how you actually use the vehicle.
My car just did a forced regen at the dealer and the light’s on again — why?
Almost always this is down to an unresolved upstream fault. A forced regen only addresses the symptom of the blocked filter, so if the underlying cause, whether that’s an EGR issue, a faulty sensor, short journey patterns or oil contamination, isn’t fixed at the same time, the filter just re-blocks straight away. This is exactly what we mean by “diagnostic first” at Panache Tuning, and it’s why repeat regens without a proper root-cause investigation are a waste of money.
Can you do DPF delete?
For UK road use the answer is no. For off-road, export, or vehicles where the filter has physically collapsed, we can look at software solutions after a proper consultation. Have a read of the section above or give us a call on 07597 921326 to discuss your situation honestly.
Will a DPF fault fail my MOT?
Yes it will. Visual inspection of the exhaust system has included DPF checks since 2014, and a warning light on at the time of the test will fail you too. Don’t leave it until MOT week to get sorted.
Do you work on vans and commercial vehicles?
Yes we do. Transits, Sprinters, Vivaros, Crafters, Ducato-based vehicles, horseboxes and minibuses are all welcome. Commercial DPFs work the same way as car DPFs and we stock the tooling for most makes and models.
