AdBlue faults & warnings — diagnosed & fixed in Wigan
AdBlue countdowns, repeat SCR faults or NOx sensor failures all causing you grief? At Panache Tuning we diagnose the root cause of the problem, explain your options honestly, and fix it in a way that stays fixed for the long term.
Symptoms we see every week
“AdBlue empty — X miles until restart prevented”
This is the countdown warning, and once it hits zero the engine won’t restart. Even if you’ve just filled the tank, the warning can stick if there’s an underlying sensor or pump fault we haven’t addressed.
Repeat SCR / NOx sensor faults
Has the fault been cleared but it’s come back? Or had a new NOx sensor fitted only for the fault to return within weeks? These are classic signs of a deeper issue, whether that’s wiring, a failing SCR catalyst, or a pump or injector fault that the garage didn’t look at.
“Emissions system — service required”
This is the generic warning that covers a dozen possible faults. We scan live data across the full SCR system, including pump pressure, NOx readings, exhaust gas temperature and dosing command, to tell you exactly which component has gone wrong.
Poor MPG and loss of power
When the SCR system can’t dose properly, the ECU often drops the engine into a low-power safety mode. You’ll lose fuel economy, throttle response, or both, sometimes without any obvious warning on the dashboard.
What goes wrong with AdBlue systems
An AdBlue / SCR system has half a dozen separate parts and any one of them can fail. Throwing replacement parts at the car or van without proper diagnostics first is how bills hit four figures quickly.
Hardware faults
- AdBlue pump failure
- AdBlue injector / dosing module blocked by crystallised urea
- NOx sensors (upstream and downstream — often replaced as a pair)
- SCR catalyst clogged, aged or contaminated
- Heater element on the tank or line (winter-specific failures)
- Wiring / connector corrosion — cheap fix if caught; expensive if ignored
Software / ECU faults
- Stored fault codes that stick after a repair until properly cleared
- Sensor calibration drift — the NOx sensor is fine but reading out of range
- Countdown timers that don’t reset even when the physical fault has been corrected
How an AdBlue diagnostic with us works
Full system scan
We connect with our dealer-level diagnostic tools and pull stored fault codes alongside live readings from every sensor in the SCR system. A code tells you what went wrong once, but live data tells you what’s actually going wrong right now.
Physical inspection
We carry out a pump pressure check, an injector flow test, a wiring visual, tank heater continuity and a fluid quality check. Five minutes of under-bonnet work that catches around 30% of faults a scan tool on its own misses.
Honest diagnosis
We give you a plain-English explanation of what’s failed, why it’s failed, what your options are, and what each option costs. No upselling. If there are two valid ways to fix it, we’ll tell you both and let you decide.
Repair or ECU solution
Depending on the fault we’ll either fit a replacement part, carry out a wiring repair, do an ECU reset, or where it’s legal and appropriate use a software solution that permanently resolves recurring faults.
Verification
Before your car or van leaves the workshop, we re-read the live data to confirm every parameter is back in spec, and we road-test the vehicle to prove the fault is gone, not just hidden.
Typical diagnostic time is 45 minutes to 1.5 hours · Mobile service is available for most vehicles, give us a call to check whether yours qualifies.
Why it’s worth doing properly
12 years of diesel experience
Panache Tuning started back in 2014 as a mobile carbon-cleaning business, which means we’ve been working on diesel emissions systems for longer than most garages have even had a scan tool. SCR and AdBlue faults are a large share of what comes through our workshop every week.
Dealer-level tools, independent pricing
Autel and Topdon give us manufacturer-equivalent live-data access. That’s the same diagnostic depth a main dealer has, without the main dealer’s hourly rate or their “replace the whole system” reflex.
Honest about what’s worth fixing
An AdBlue pump on a 10-year-old van with 180,000 miles on the clock isn’t always worth £1,200 of parts and labour. At Panache Tuning we’ll tell you when it is and when it isn’t, and what a sensible alternative looks like for your vehicle’s remaining life.
AdBlue delete / permanent solutions — what’s legal and what isn’t
We get asked about “AdBlue delete” every single week, so let’s be straight about it from the start.
For road-registered vehicles used on UK public roads: removing or disabling a working emissions system is not legal.
Where a permanent software solution is appropriate:
- Off-road vehicles — agricultural, plant, motorsport, private-land-only
- Export vehicles — being shipped to markets where the regulation doesn’t apply
- Vehicles where the physical system has already failed catastrophically and the owner has made an informed decision in consultation with us (and in commercial cases, their operator’s compliance team)
In those situations, a permanent software solution avoids the recurring-fault cycle that a physical repair can’t reliably break. At Panache Tuning we’ll only do this work where the use case is legal and properly documented.
If you’re unsure where your situation sits, give us a call on 07597 921326 and we’ll talk through it honestly with you.
What it costs
We price diagnostic work per job, not per hour. You pay for the answer, not the clock.
| Job | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full AdBlue / SCR diagnostic | £60–£90 | Scan + live data + physical inspection + written findings |
| NOx sensor replacement | £180–£320 | Part + fit, depends on make and position (upstream / downstream) |
| AdBlue pump replacement | £450–£900 | Pump + fit + system bleed, depends on make |
| AdBlue injector clean / replace | £120–£280 | Varies by severity and access |
| ECU solution (where legal — see above) | POA | Honest quote after diagnosis — never a blind price |
These prices are typical ranges, not fixed quotes. Give us a call on 07597 921326 for a firm number once we know the exact vehicle and the fault we’re dealing with. Finance is available.

Questions we get asked
My AdBlue warning has counted down to zero and the car won’t start. Can you help?
Yes and urgently. Give us a call the moment it happens, don’t let it sit there. Once the countdown locks you out, refilling the tank alone usually won’t clear the fault. The ECU needs to see a successful dosing cycle plus a valid NOx reading before it’ll release the no-restart lock. If the underlying fault is still present, the lock stays on even with a full tank. Bring it into the workshop, or we’ll come to you for most vehicles.
I’ve had the NOx sensor replaced twice and the fault keeps coming back. What’s going on?
This is a classic sign that the NOx sensor wasn’t the real fault in the first place. Repeat failures are usually caused by either wiring or connector corrosion that gradually kills every new sensor, an SCR catalyst problem the new sensor is correctly reporting, or contaminated and out-of-spec AdBlue fluid. A proper diagnostic finds the underlying cause, whereas swapping parts until something sticks rarely does.
Will topping up the AdBlue tank clear the warning?
Sometimes it will, if the fault was genuinely just a low-level warning. But if there’s an underlying pump, injector, sensor or dosing fault, a refill won’t clear it. You’ll just refill the tank and watch the countdown tick straight back down again.
Can you do AdBlue delete?
For UK road use the answer is no. For off-road, export, or vehicles where the physical system has catastrophically failed, we can look at software solutions after a proper consultation. Have a read of the section above or give us a call on 07597 921326 to discuss your specific situation honestly.
How long does an AdBlue diagnostic take?
Around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for a full diagnostic including the scan, live data and physical inspection. Simple fixes like a sensor, wiring repair or reset can usually be done the same day. Bigger parts like a pump or injector often need a day or two to order in unless your vehicle is a common platform we stock for.
Will an AdBlue fault fail my MOT?
The MOT has included an emissions warning light check since 2018, and a permanent amber or red AdBlue warning is an MOT failure point on most modern diesels. Intermittent warnings can pass if they’re not on at the moment of test, but that’s down to luck rather than being properly fixed. Get it diagnosed well before MOT week comes around.
Do you work on commercial vehicles and vans?
Yes we do, vans are a large part of our work. AdBlue faults on Transits, Sprinters, Vivaros, Crafters and similar commercial vehicles are bread-and-butter for us.
Is my vehicle too old / too new / too unusual?
All modern diesel platforms from 2016 onwards with SCR are supported. For unusual imports or very new platforms, give us a call first to confirm our tools cover yours before you drive over.
