What it costs to start a remapping business and what you can realistically earn

Starting a mobile remapping business in the UK on a slave tool typically costs around £3,500–£6,000 for the tool, essential kit and first-year insurance. A Stage 1 remap usually sells for £250–£350, so after the file cost most operators keep somewhere around £150–£250 per job before running costs. Here are the numbers, line by line.

Most “start a remapping business” adverts lead with the earnings and go quiet on the costs. I’d rather do it the other way round, because the people who do well in this industry are the ones who went in with their eyes open.

Everything below assumes the most common starting point: a mobile business on a slave tool, where a file provider writes your files. If you’re weighing up master vs slave, read our master vs slave guide first — it changes the numbers a lot.

One-off start-up costs

ItemTypical costNotes
Remapping tool (slave)£2,175–£3,300Genuine KESS3 slave from £2,174.99 inc VAT with 12 months’ subscription; Autotuner slave £3,300 inc VAT with no subscription
Battery support unit£300–£600Not optional — a voltage drop mid-write can brick an ECU
Diagnostic scanner£300–£1,000+Scan every car before you touch it
Dedicated laptop£300–£600Windows, used only for tuning
Insurance (first year)roughly £600–£2,000Public liability plus cover for the work itself — get quotes, it varies a lot
Website, branding, cards£0–£1,500Start simple; reviews matter more than a logo

Realistic total for a mobile slave setup: about £3,500–£6,000, assuming you already have a vehicle. You can spread the tool cost: we offer 0% finance over 12 months on KESS3 and Autotuner, which keeps cash free for the rest of the kit.

Going master instead? The tool costs more (our KESS3 master starts from £3,999.99 and Autotuner master is £5,400), plus calibration software such as WinOLS at around £725 ex VAT, plus the time it takes to learn to write files safely. Realistically £6,000–£12,000+ before you’re earning, which is why most people start on slave.

Ongoing costs

  • Files: paid per job to your file provider. Prices vary with the provider, the vehicle and your volume — ours are £30–£70 per file depending on the job, with tier pricing as you grow, and you can see every price up front by creating a free account on our dealer portal.
  • Tool subscription: KESS3 needs an annual subscription after year one, roughly £400–£600 depending on protocols. Autotuner has none.
  • Insurance renewal, fuel, phone, and marketing (most of which should be asking happy customers for reviews).
  • Revisions and comebacks: budget time, not just money, for the occasional car that needs a second look.

The tool is the cheapest mistake you can make. The file provider and the insurance are the expensive ones.

What you can realistically earn

A Stage 1 remap on a typical car or van sells for around £250–£350 in most of the UK. Economy remaps for vans and fleets sit in a similar range and are often easier to sell in volume.

Take off the file cost and you keep roughly £150–£250 per job before running costs. Here’s what that looks like at different levels of commitment:

LevelJobsMargin after files (approx.)
Side-line3 a week£450–£750 a week
Part-time6 a week£900–£1,500 a week
Full-time, established3–4 a day£2,250–£5,000 a week

Two honest caveats. First, nobody starts at the top row — building a diary full of work takes months of good results and reviews. Second, once your turnover passes the VAT registration threshold (currently £90,000) you’ll need to charge VAT, which changes your pricing. Speak to an accountant early.

How long to pay back the kit?

At around £200 margin per job, a £4,000 setup pays for itself in roughly 20 jobs. For a side-line doing three jobs a week, that’s under two months. That’s why the slave route is so popular — the risk is small and the payback is quick, if your files are good.

What decides whether you hit those numbers

  • File quality. One bad file costs you a customer and their friends. See how to choose a file provider.
  • Reviews. In remapping, trust sells. Ask every happy customer for a Google review.
  • Saying no. Cars with existing faults, and requests for illegal emissions work, cost far more than they earn.
  • Support behind you. When something unusual happens mid-job, a phone call to someone who knows is worth more than any discount.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to start a remapping business in the UK?

A mobile remapping business on a slave tool typically costs around £3,500–£6,000 to start, covering a genuine tool (£2,175–£3,300), a battery support unit, a diagnostic scanner, a laptop and first-year insurance. A master setup typically costs £6,000–£12,000 or more.

How much can you earn from remapping?

A Stage 1 remap usually sells for £250–£350. After the file cost, operators typically keep around £150–£250 per job before running costs, so three jobs a week is roughly £450–£750 a week and an established full-time operator can make several thousand pounds a week.

How much do remap files cost per file?

It depends on the file provider, the vehicle and your volume. Panache Tuning’s trade files cost £30–£70 each depending on the job, with tier pricing as volume grows and no monthly fees. Every price is listed in its free dealer portal.

Do you need qualifications or a licence to remap cars in the UK?

No specific licence or qualification is legally required to remap cars in the UK. You do need proper insurance, training on your tool and good diagnostic practice, and you should tell customers to inform their insurer. Removing or disabling emissions equipment such as a DPF, EGR or AdBlue system on a road vehicle is illegal, so a professional remapping business shouldn’t offer it.

Is remapping legal in the UK?

Yes. Remapping a car’s ECU is legal in the UK, as long as emissions equipment stays in place and working and the customer declares the modification to their insurer. See is remapping safe? for more.
