Why people call us for keys

Need a spare — don’t want to pay dealer prices

Dealers routinely charge £200–£500+ for a spare key on a modern car or van. For most common platforms we can do the same job for materially less, with the same security, the same coding, and the same working key in your hand at the end.

Lost all keys — car won’t start

Full “all keys lost” programming. We’ll either come to you or arrange a recovery to the workshop, source the correct key blank or fob for your vehicle, cut the blade where applicable, and program it to the immobiliser so the car or van starts again.

Bought a second-hand car, only got one key

Very common scenario this one. We’ll program a second key so you’ve got a proper spare in the drawer. Less of an emergency, and a lot cheaper to sort now than on the day you lose the only one you have.

Fob not working — keyless entry playing up

Battery checked but the remote not working, keyless entry intermittent, or a “key not detected” message? Could be the fob itself, could be the receiver, could be a rolling-code desync. At Panache Tuning we diagnose before we sell you a new fob.

// What’s actually in a modern key

What a proper key programming job looks like

A car key isn’t just a bit of cut metal any more, it’s a chip that talks to your car’s immobiliser, plus on most modern cars a remote or proximity fob with rolling-code encryption built in. Cutting the blade is the easy bit, getting the electronics to pair with the immobiliser is where the actual work is.

What’s included in a typical job

  • Correct key blank / fob — sourced specifically for your VIN and model year
  • Blade cutting (where applicable) — by machine from the key code or the original
  • Transponder chip programming — pairing the chip to the vehicle’s immobiliser ECU
  • Remote / proximity fob coding — registering the fob buttons and rolling-code with the vehicle
  • Verification — engine starts on the new key, remote functions work, original keys still work

Why prices vary between cars

  • Key type — basic transponder vs remote vs proximity smart-key vs deployable blade
  • Manufacturer security — some brands (and model years) need additional passwords, longer programming sessions, or main-dealer connection for certain operations
  • Key availability — some blanks are OEM-only and cost more; aftermarket equivalents exist for many platforms
  • Spare vs all-keys-lost — an all-keys-lost job needs additional immobiliser work vs coding a spare when an original is present

How a key job with us works

Tell us the vehicle

Make, model, year and ideally the VIN (the 17-character number on your V5 logbook or in the lower corner of the windscreen). We’ll confirm within minutes whether we cover your platform, what key type it needs, and give you an accurate price.

Confirm price and book in

No vague quotes from us, just a firm price before you commit. Workshop slot or mobile visit to your driveway, whichever suits you better. Mobile coverage extends across most local postcodes.

Key and blade preparation

We source the correct blank or fob for your VIN and model year, then cut the blade where applicable before we start the programming.

Programming session

We connect the diagnostic platform, authenticate to the immobiliser ECU, and pair the new key’s transponder chip plus the remote or proximity fob. Typically 20–45 minutes of connected time, depending on the platform.

Verification and handover

We start the engine on the new key, test the remote buttons, and confirm the original keys still work on spare jobs. You leave with a working key and a receipt, no “come back if it doesn’t work” sign-off.

Typical time is 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the key type and platform · Mobile service adds some travel time, we’ll tell you the total when we book.

// Why us

Why not just go to a dealer or a random locksmith

12 years of automotive diagnostics

Key programming is a diagnostic job at heart, and it lives or dies on whether your technician knows how to authenticate to the immobiliser ECU on your specific platform. Panache Tuning has been doing automotive diagnostic work since 2014, across every major manufacturer, on the same professional platforms the dealers use.

Honest, upfront pricing

You get the firm price before you commit, not a “we’ll see” quote that grows once we’re on your driveway with the kit out. And if yours is one of the few platforms we can’t cover, we’ll tell you straight away and save you the trip.

Workshop or mobile

Drive to us at 186b Manchester Road, or book a mobile visit to your driveway. Same equipment, same capability either way, with most of Wigan, Skelmersdale, Ormskirk, Leigh, Chorley and St Helens covered.

// Straight talk

What we can and can’t do

We’d rather tell you upfront than take a booking we can’t actually deliver on. So here’s the honest picture:

What we cover comfortably

  • Most mainstream platforms from ~2000 onwards — Ford, Vauxhall, VW Group (VW / Audi / Skoda / Seat), BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, Renault, Peugeot/Citroën, and similar
  • Commercial vehicles — Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro, Crafter, Ducato-based panel vans
  • Spare key, all-keys-lost, and remote/proximity fob coding on the above
  • Most common used / second-hand scenarios — one key, need a spare; key worn out; remote button failure

Where we’ll be straight with you

  • Very newest platforms (2024 onwards, some even earlier on certain brands) — some manufacturers have locked key operations to main-dealer online systems. We’ll tell you by VIN before you book whether yours is one.
  • Exotic / very low-volume imports — some Japanese/American grey imports need specific tooling we don’t hold; we’ll refer you to a specialist.
  • Security-locked “all keys lost” on select premium models — some late-model high-end platforms (certain Porsche, AMG, McLaren, some premium BMW/Mercedes trims) are genuinely dealer-only for all-keys-lost work. Spare-key jobs on the same cars are usually still fine.

The best test is to give us a call on 07597 921326 with the VIN, and we’ll give you a straight yes or no along with a price in the same conversation. No “come and find out on the driveway” surprises.

// Transparent pricing

What it costs

We’ll give you a firm price once we know the vehicle, but typical ranges look something like this.

JobTypical priceNotes
Spare transponder key (basic, older platforms)£80–£120Blade + chip + programming
Spare remote key (fob with buttons)£80–£190Blank + remote + programming
Spare proximity / keyless smart-key£110–£210Varies significantly by platform
All-keys-lost codingPOALonger programming session, blank + recovery may be extra
Remote / fob repair (button cell, shell, failed switches)£90–£150Where the coding is fine but the fob itself is failing

These prices are typical ranges, not fixed quotes. We’ll give you a firm price once we have the VIN. Finance is available on the larger jobs.

// The questions we get

Questions we get asked

How much cheaper are you than the dealer?

Typically materially cheaper. Dealer spare-key prices of £300–£500+ are pretty normal, and we can often do the same job for a fraction once you add up parts, programming and the main dealer hourly rate. Give us a call with your VIN and we’ll give you a firm comparison.

I’ve lost all my keys and the car’s on my drive. What happens?

Give us a call on 07597 921326 straight away. For most common platforms we can come to you, source the correct key, cut the blade and program the new key on your driveway in one visit, one price. Some platforms need the car or van recovered to the workshop, and we’ll tell you which yours is on the call.

Do I need to come to you or can you come to me?

Mobile service is available across most local postcodes including Wigan, Leigh, Ashton, Standish, Hindley, Platt Bridge, Orrell, Skelmersdale, Ormskirk, Chorley and St Helens. Give us a call with your postcode if you’re outside that list.

How long does programming take?

Around 30 minutes to 1.5 hours for most jobs, depending on the key type. Spare transponder keys on older cars are the quickest. Proximity and smart-keys on modern platforms take longer because of the security handshake involved.

Will my old keys still work after you’ve programmed a new one?

Yes they will. On a spare-key job we add the new key to the immobiliser without erasing the existing ones. Your existing keys keep working exactly as before.

What if you can’t do my car?

We’ll tell you before you commit, usually on the first phone call once we’ve got the VIN. No wasted visits, no “come and find out”. If it’s something genuinely dealer-only, like some of the very newest platforms or certain security-locked premium models, we’ll point you in the right direction.

Do I need the V5 / proof of ownership?

Yes you do. For lost-key and all-keys-lost work we’ll need to see proof you own the vehicle, which means the V5, photo ID, and ideally a recent insurance document too. This is standard industry practice. For a spare key where you already have a working original, the requirement is less formal but we still need to be satisfied you’re the owner.

Can you do keyless-entry / push-button-start cars?

Yes we can, on most mainstream platforms. These use proximity fobs with rolling-code encryption, so they take slightly longer to program than a basic remote, but the process is the same. Some of the very newest premium models are the exception, give us a call with the VIN to confirm.

// Spread the cost

Larger jobs don’t have to land as a one-off hit

Most key jobs are a one-off payment, but if you’re bundling with other work or the job is a bigger all-keys-lost scenario, finance is available so you can spread the cost:

  • Klarna — 3 interest-free payments
  • PayPal Pay in 4 — 4 interest-free payments
  • Payment Assist — longer terms, 0% available on larger jobs
