Advanced diagnostics — when other garages have given up
Got a warning light nobody can clear, an intermittent fault nobody can catch, or a “we can’t replicate it” verdict from the dealer? That’s exactly the work we do every week at Panache Tuning, with live-data diagnosis, root-cause fixes and plain-English answers you can actually understand.
The problems we solve every week
Warning lights other garages can’t clear
EML, ESP, ABS, emissions, airbag, you name it. You’ve had the car on a code reader, maybe had a part changed, and the light came back within a week. That’s not a faulty scanner, that’s a shallow diagnostic that didn’t get to the real cause.
Intermittent faults nobody can catch
“It only does it when…” — the classic line. The car’s been to two garages and both have shrugged their shoulders. Intermittent faults need live-data monitoring, freeze-frame data and a technician who knows what they’re actually looking at.
Limp mode / loss of power
The ECU has decided something’s wrong and dropped the engine into limp mode. It could be a turbo, sensor, fuel, emissions or electrical fault, but it won’t tell you which without a proper scan. We see this all the time on Transits, Sprinters, VAG and PSA diesels.
“They said it needs a new [expensive thing]”
A dealer or local garage has quoted you £1,500+ for a part without doing a proper diagnostic first. Get a second opinion before you sign that work off. At Panache Tuning we’re honest about what’s actually failed versus what’s just been thrown in the quote.
Advanced diagnostics isn’t just a fancier code reader
Plugging in a cheap OBD reader and reading a code takes thirty seconds. Working out why that code set in the first place, and what else is going on that hasn’t flagged a code yet, is the actual diagnostic job we do.
What a proper diagnostic includes
- Stored and pending fault codes across every ECU on the car, not just the engine
- Live data streams — sensor readings while the engine’s running, under load, at temperature
- Freeze-frame data — what was happening the moment a fault was logged
- Actuation tests — commanding the ECU to fire an injector, open the EGR, run the fuel pump, so we can see the part respond (or not)
- Physical inspection — wiring, connectors, pipework, harness routing
- Road test with logging — some faults only appear at load, temperature or specific RPM ranges
What we’re actually looking for
- Root cause, not a stored code — a stored code is a symptom; the cause is usually somewhere else
- Secondary faults — the thing you came in for and the three other things nobody’s told you about
- Wiring / connector problems — easy money for a garage to sell a new part when the real fault is a corroded pin for £15
How a diagnostic with us works
Tell us what you’re seeing
Warning light, intermittent rough idle, poor MPG, doesn’t start when hot? The more you tell us on the phone, the more we can line up before you arrive at the workshop, including which live-data streams to capture on the first road test.
Full system scan
We scan every ECU on the car or van, including engine, gearbox, ABS, airbag, comfort and body modules. Cross-module faults like an ABS problem causing engine hesitation are common, and easy to miss if you only read the engine ECU.
Live data + actuation tests
We run the engine under the specific conditions the fault appears in and record the sensor streams that matter. Where appropriate, we command the suspect component directly and watch the response in real time. Real answers, not guesswork.
Physical inspection
We carry out a connector check, a wiring visual, ground points, fuses and any signs of heat damage, water ingress or chafing. Five minutes with a torch in hand that catches faults a scanner on its own would never find.
Honest diagnosis
Plain English from us: this is what’s failed, this is why, these are your options, and this is what each one costs. We’ll tell you when it’s worth fixing and when it isn’t, and if the right answer is “scrap it, it owes you nothing”, we’ll say that too.
Typical diagnostic time is 45 minutes to 2 hours · Mobile service is available for most vehicles, give us a call to check whether yours qualifies.
Why bring it to us instead of anyone else
12 years, 4,353+ vehicles
Panache Tuning has been diagnosing and repairing diesel and petrol faults since 2014. That’s not a sideline service for us, it’s the core of what comes through our workshop every day. Most of the cars and vans we see have already been to somewhere else.
Dealer-level tools, independent pricing
We use Autel and Topdon professional diagnostic platforms, which give us the same live-data depth a main dealer has across every major manufacturer. All without the main dealer’s hourly rate or their “replace the whole module” reflex.
No guesswork, no parts darts
We don’t fit parts just to see if they fix the problem. If a diagnostic doesn’t give us a confident answer, we’ll say so and either dig deeper or refer you on, but we’ll never charge you for a guess. The whole business runs on repeat customers and word-of-mouth.
What we don’t do
Being straight about the limits of what we do matters just as much as the pitch. So here goes:
- Bodywork, paint, alignment rigs, major collision repair — not our work. We’ll recommend a local specialist.
- Gearbox internal rebuilds — we diagnose the fault and confirm the cause, but rebuilds go to a transmission specialist.
- Heavy HGV / tractor unit diagnostics — we cover vans and light commercial comfortably; anything HGV-class is a specialist call.
- Main-dealer-locked coding on brand-new platforms — very newest platforms sometimes need dealer-only software. We’ll tell you upfront if yours is one.
If your fault sits outside what we’re the right shop for, we’ll say so honestly and point you at someone who is. Getting you fixed properly matters to us more than landing the job. Give us a call on 07597 921326 to talk it through.
What it costs
We price diagnostic work per job, not per hour. You pay for the answer, not the clock.
| Job | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full vehicle diagnostic (all ECUs, live data, inspection) | £60–£90 | Full scan, live-data capture, physical inspection, written findings |
| Intermittent-fault / extended diagnostic | £90–£150 | When a standard diagnostic didn’t catch it — longer road test, data logging over multiple cold/hot cycles |
| Mobile diagnostic (most local areas) | £80–£120 | Diagnostic performed at your address. Call to confirm coverage. |
| Second-opinion diagnostic | £60–£90 | Another garage has quoted you — we verify what’s actually failed before you sign the work off |
| Subsequent repair | POA | Honest quote once we know exactly what it is. No blind prices. |
These prices are typical ranges, not fixed quotes. Give us a call on 07597 921326 for a firm number once we know the vehicle and the symptom we’re dealing with. Finance is available for the larger repair bills.
Reviews from diagnostic customers
“Steve came to my address to solve an orange engine fault, explained the fault and the problem, fixed the issue. Very helpful, friendly and professional. Highly recommend.”
“Excellent service, quick, efficient and a real difference to the vehicle. The vehicle runs infinitely better — improved the MPG by around 10–15% overall and the throttle response is considerably better. Now drives like a new vehicle.”
“Fantastic place. Both Steve and Dave who work there explained things brilliantly to me as a lay person. Fixed the issue with my Golf. Would definitely recommend.”
“A+ service and very responsive! Steve was very accommodating and helpful. He looked at my car and within the hour told me what my issues were and was very honest with me with the options. Very fair price and very honest approach — would recommend a million times over.”
Questions we get asked
My warning light’s been on for ages — is it urgent?
Depends which light it is. An amber means book in this week. A red or flashing engine warning means stop driving and give us a call straight away. Ignoring an amber long enough turns it into a red, and sometimes into a failed component that costs 5× what the original fix would have.
I’ve already had this diagnosed somewhere else. Will you charge me again?
Yes, for the diagnostic time, because we’ll redo the whole thing properly rather than take someone else’s word for it. If the previous diagnosis was right, that’s quick and we’ll tell you that. If it was wrong, you’ve probably saved yourself the cost of a part you didn’t need. Plenty of our customers land here exactly that way.
Can you do mobile diagnostics?
Yes we do, across most local postcodes including Wigan, Leigh, Ashton, Standish, Hindley, Platt Bridge, Orrell, Skelmersdale, Ormskirk, Chorley and St Helens. Some faults need the workshop because they need lifts, compressed air or bench scopes, so we’ll be upfront with you if yours does.
What makes “advanced” diagnostics different from a code reader?
A code reader tells you what the ECU logged. Advanced diagnostics tells you why the ECU logged it in the first place, and that’s where the actual fix is. We use live data, actuation tests, freeze-frame analysis, cross-module scanning and a proper physical inspection, not just a PID read-out.
How long does a diagnostic take?
Around 45 minutes to 2 hours for most jobs. Intermittent faults that only show up after a cold-hot-cold cycle sometimes need longer, and we’ll tell you up front if we think yours is one of those.
Do you work on petrol cars, not just diesel?
Yes we do. Petrol is a smaller share of the work coming through our workshop but the diagnostic tools are the same and we have all the platforms. The core experience for us is diesel emissions, DPF and SCR work, but an EML on a petrol car or van is still our work.
Can you do key coding / immobiliser work?
Yes we can do basic key coding on most common platforms. Some manufacturers are locked to main dealer tooling on the newest models, so we’ll tell you upfront if yours is one of those before you waste a trip.
What do I bring with me?
The key, the V5 if you have it to hand, and a rough description of when the fault happens. If you’ve got previous invoices from other garages that relate to the same fault, bring those along too because it saves us redoing work that’s already been done.
If the diagnostic uncovers a bigger repair, finance is available
Three finance options at checkout, so you can pay however suits you best:
- Klarna — 3 interest-free payments
- PayPal Pay in 4 — 4 interest-free payments
- Payment Assist — longer terms, 0% available on larger jobs
